Zimmer undergoes emergency eye surgery, may not coach Thursday

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer will undergo emergency eye surgery Wednesday night and may not coach Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys, general manager Rick Spielman announced.

Mike Zimmer is having emergency eye surgery tonight. His status for coaching tomorrow’s game is uncertain. I have met with the coaches and players and we have a contingency plan in place if Mike is unable to coach against Dallas.

Spielman will make an announcement Thursday morning regarding the Vikings plan.

Zimmer, 60, had to have what the team called "a minor medical procedure" in early November after the team's Monday night loss to the Chicago Bears. The veteran coach missed two scheduled media sessions after the procedure, which was never specified.

Vikings interim offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and offensive line coach Tony Sparano both have NFL head coaching experience with the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins respectively.
